Dogs and Resolutions

As the calendar flips to a new year, the time to make resolutions is upon us. While the trends of resolutions vary from year to year, they really boil down to establishing patterns that make us feel better, get more out of life, and increase our happiness. One of the best ways to keep on track with any goal is having a level of accountability. Enter Dog: the best accountability buddy out there.
So how can a dog help you achieve your goals? If your resolution is to be more physically active; no brainer! Your dog needs exercise to stay healthy and for mental stimulation. When you walk, hike, run, play with your dog, you are strengthening the bond between the two of you, moving your bodies, and sticking to a resolution you made. If getting outside more and unplugging from technology is something you would like to do more of in 2020, dogs are wonderful hiking partners. In an increasingly digital world, getting time outside connecting with your pet can feel like a delightful return to a simpler time.

Having a pet is also a wonderful way to decrease stress and increase happiness, on a hormonal level. A study at Washington State University found that when students were allowed to pet, interact, and generally play with cats and dogs for 10 mins, their cortisol (which is a stress hormone) levels decreased significantly. A Japanese study from 2015 showed that when you look into your dog’s eyes, oxytocin (the “happy” hormone) gets released in both the dog’s and the human’s brains, increasing the bond felt. Not only does oxytocin affirm our bonds with our pets, it also counters the effects of cortisol. Having a furry friend can help us recover from stress.

Considering a resolution where you help your dog be more active and get healthier? Elevating your dog’s activity and mental stimulation are two great goals that can be achieved in one great service. Wag Hotels’ K9 Fit Package includes high intensity fetch to work the zoomies out, splash time for pups who love playing in water, and a low calorie cookie - because all the effort deserves a little treat. This can be added on to daycare or a boarding stay for $20, but for January, we are offering 50% off the K9 Fit Package. Let your energetic pup work out the wiggles for only $10 per session this month. You can sign up today by calling 888-WAG-LINE or clicking making a reservation today by clicking here.
Pets chill us out, provide unconditional love, and are fantastic for companionship and accountability. Take goals day by day and don’t beat yourself up if you’re not on track 100% of the time. It’s usually not a linear journey and small changes can make big differences in how we feel about ourselves and the world around us. The best part about allowing your dog to support your resolutions: they don’t judge us!
